What is physical therapy and how can it help me?
Physical therapy is a highly individualized form of treatment for various musculoskeletal and neurological conditions or injuries designed to relive pain and restore normal function with daily activities. Physical therapy treatments are designed to address not only your pain or dysfunction, but also the underlying cause or causes. Treatments may consist of one or more of the following:
- Education about your specific condition as well as injury prevention strategies.
- Instruction in an individualized exercise program to address muscle imbalances.
- “Hands-on” techniques such as manual stretching, therapeutic massage, scar mobilization, and myofascial release techniques.
- Modalities such as ultrasound, traction, electrical stimulation, moist heat, ice, and paraffin baths that can decrease pain, swelling, and inflammation.
What Conditions can benefit from physical therapy?
Common conditions treated in our clinic include back/neck pain, pain in an extremity or joint (shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, foot), post-operative rehabilitation, sports injuries, work-related injuries, repetitive use injuries (Carpal tunnel, tennis/golfer’s elbow, tendonitis, plantar fascitis), balance disorders, vertigo, pre/post-natal pain, and higher level neurological disorders (stroke, nerve injuries, MS).
Does my insurance cover physical therapy?
Insurance covers physical therapy in most cases. Benefits vary with each particular insurance plan. Some plans may include deductibles, co-insurances, and/or co-pays. Please call our office and we would be happy to verify your coverage and benefits.
Do I need a referral (prescription) from my doctor for physical therapy?
According to Texas law, a licensed physical therapist may assess any patient without a referral from a physician. A referral (prescription) from your physician, however, is required before physical therapy treatment may be initiated. Most of our patients have already received a referral from their physician prior to their initial assessment. If you do not have a referral, however, you may schedule a 30 minute assessment, free of charge, with one of our therapists to determine if physical therapy would be beneficial for your condition. The therapist will perform a review your history, perform a physical examination, and discuss with you possible treatment options. If you and your therapist agree that physical therapy would be beneficial, we can contact your physician to request a referral. Depending upon you diagnosis, your physician may ask you to schedule an appointment in his/her office prior to initiating a P.T. referral.
What will happen on my first visit?
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your first scheduled appointment to fill out new patient paperwork or, if you wish, you may download and bring in your completed paperwork to speed up the check in process. We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows the therapist to easily examine your injured area. Your first visit will last approximately 90 minutes. During this time, a detailed assessment will be performed by a licensed physical therapist. Your assessment will consist of a review of your past and current medical history as well as a thorough physical examination individualized for your particular diagnosis. Following the assessment, your therapist will spend time with you discussing your diagnosis and their findings. Your therapist will then recommend an individualized plan of care. In most cases, treatment will be initiated during the first visit.
How can I start physical therapy?
Contact our office to schedule your initial evaluation or free assessment (if you do not already have a referral from your doctor). At that time, our staff will ask you for basic information, including you condition and insurance information so that we may verify your benefits prior to your first visit. We can generally schedule you within the same week and in some cases the same day that you call. In order to accommodate our other patients, we ask that you please provide 24-hour advance notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
When my physical therapy is completed, what are my options?
When you have completed physical therapy you will be given the opportunity to participate in our Independent Rehab Program. We offer this program free of charge for the first month. The cost is only $30.00 per month thereafter with no initiation fee or long-term contract to sign. This program allows you to exercise in our facility as often as you desire, utilizing the same equipment that you used during therapy in order to continue building strength and to condition your body. A therapist will always be present to assist or advise you with your exercises; however, no formal treatment may be given to participants in this program.
